Set subpage navigation (Parent/Child hierarchy)
What is subpage navigation?
Page navigation controls how users journey through your site to find what they need.
There are 3 levels of pages in your site:
- L1: page
- L2: Sections
- L3: Subsections
- L2: Sections
Its best to use these thematically, for example:
- L1: Homepage [Fruit and vegetables]
- L2: Fruit
- L3: apples
- L3: strawberries
- L3: oranges
- L2: Vegetables
- L3: carrots
- L3: potatoes
- L3: asparagus
- L2: Nutrition
- L2: Fruit
The home page is the ‘parent’ of the 3 sections : Fruit, Vegetables and Nutrition.
A section is a ‘parent’ of its subsections. For example, the Fruit page is the parent of the apples, strawberries and oranges pages. The apples, strawberries and oranges pages are children of the Fruit page.
When you open a Level 2 page you will see a menu on the right which links to all of its ‘child’ pages (with the title “In This Section”).
Set Parent/Child hierarchy of pages
Page hierarchy refers to the ‘parent’ and ‘child’ status of each page. You can set this up when you make this page or edit your page to add this information.
To change your page’s hierarchy:
- In ‘Pages’, select and enter the page you want as a ‘Child’ page.
- Select the right-side ‘Settings’ tab
- In the right settings sidebar, click the ‘Page’ tab to make sure it’s selected.
- Scroll down to ‘Parent ’ and select the page you want to be the parent.
How to set the order of multiple Child Pages
- Then select the ‘3 vertical dots’ at the top right of Page Settings
- Select ‘Order’, and choose the order of pages. Starting with ‘0’ for the top page. Then 1, 2, etc. Pages with the same order value are sorted alphabetically
- You can also number the pages in the hierarchy, in “Quick Edit”
- Click ‘Publish’ or ‘Update’.
